Adam's Parachute: addiction, recovery and fly fishing
Join us on this journey of recovery and rediscovery in the tranquil rivers and streams of nature.
About us
Our son, Adam, died on July 13, 2024 from an accidental overdose. He fought his addiction ferociously and had been clean for two years at the time of his death. During that two years, as a case worker and then business development officer, Adam gave everything he had to help those suffering from addiction and working to maintain their recoveries. Adam was hell bent on helping and saving every single struggling person who crossed his path. In the end, Adam gave his parachute to someone else as he died the day after he saved a young person's life, one of many lives he saved.
I am a retired physician and an avid fly fisherman. I have seen first hand the therapeutic effects of fly fishing in various populations in need of healing. The benefits of fly fishing include decreased symptoms of PTSD, decreased depression, decreased anxiety, improved leisure quality, improved sleep quality, and improved focus in the present moment, shedding the demons of the past and the fear inducing questions of the future. Standing in a river one looks upstream to the future and downstream to the past, but fly fishing successfully demands focus on the water in front of you, where you land your fly and face the challenge of hooking and landing a fish.
Through my program, which is completely cost free, I intend to bring the therapeutic effects of fly fishing to the addiction/recovery community including not just those struggling with addiction and those fighting in recovery, but also to those working in this highly stressful field. Such caregivers are often in recovery themselves, as Adam was, and the frequent triggers and all too common heartbreak and loss exact a terrible toll.
We are introducing fly fishing to the world of addiction and recovery. We will teach you to cast, tie knots, tie your own flies and also get you out on the water to practice and enjoy this healing sport in God's beautiful Nature. Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible, to encourage healing in anyone who is broken, and in so doing to honor the legacy of our son, Adam, who never stopped giving of himself for the sake of others.
Please call if you or a program you work in are interested.
